Eco-friendly Green Point Jacking Grease for jack up lubrication

Do you recognize a world in the Marine & Offshore in which machines and equipment are exposed to extreme demands? Do you come across immense loads and highly variable weather conditions in environments where strict lubricating regulations apply for jacking systems?

In this document we want to share information and innovations bringing total costs down and reliability levels up by particular, environmentally acceptable solutions for jacking vessels from a lubrication perspective.

Green Point Jacking Grease

The result that fulfils the demands:
Green Point Jacking Grease

To offer our customers optimal performance, every day we are working to invent, develop, test and prepare the best technologies for today, tomorrow and the future. Not only do we take into account existing and new (environmentally acceptable) requirements, but also those which are likely to apply in the future.

The conditions under which the rack and pinions of a lifting platform or so-called jacking system must serve, require a specific biodegradable grease which guarantees excellent performance in all conditions and maximizes the reliability and service life of your assets.

To develop a new heavy duty biodegradable grease for jacking systems we had set ourselves a number of challenging starting points in advance, resulting in the following features of our new product:

Green Point Jacking Grease is from origin exclusively created for jacking systems, but it is also applicable to other heavy duty applications:

  • Open gears subjected to light or heavy duty operating conditions
  • Gear Rack & Pinions and spur gears
  • Slowly rotating ball-, roller- and friction bearings and bushes
  • Slewing rings
  • Cylinder- and piston units
  • Guide- and sliding tracks
  • ROV umbilicals
  • Exposed gears and wire ropes for bridges and locks and for use in the shipping, offshore and dredging industries
  • Offshore cable carousels

Which are the technical, financial and eco-friendly challenges regarding the lubricant for a jack-up system?

Impressive developments
The trend is that equipment is getting bigger, more impressive and that loads are increasing strongly. Due to these developments, more and more strict demands are being imposed on the equipment used in the offshore industry and on installation vessels. While new vessels are under construction, many existing vessels are being upgraded and retrofitted to what is possible within their technical limits.

Technical challenge
When a vessel needs to jack, it needs to jack. So equipment needs to perform and wear and tear needs to be minimalized. The open gears need to be protected and the grease is a very important factor in this.

But of course, also the lubrication system needs to be compatible with the grease and reliable 24/7, both at the equator and the poles in wet and in freezing as well as hot temperatures.

Financial challenge
Every day a vessel is not available due to technical issues there is a big problem. Also direct expenditure on maintenance products like lubricants may be unexpectedly high. Let alone the availability.

Creating the balance between reliability and cost is paramount. But when do you reach this balance?

Environmental challenge
Across the world different regulations are applied for installation vessels and the use of lubricants on board. Internal policies of asset owners are often leading. Van Meeuwen can help with knowledge and products that will help to set or fulfil the requirements.

Which are the challenges in developing the high-performance Green Point Jacking Grease?

Environment
Biodegradable EAL with registrations such as VGP, HONCF-OSPAR (Yellow) and an entry on the LuSC list

Extreme high loads
Withstanding extremely high loads. This means that you need at least:

  • An extremely high lubricating film strength
  • A base oil viscosity of 1000 mm2/s
  • No use of a VI improver (Viscosity Index)

High film strength
> 9000 N in a four ball weld load test

Harsh environment
Excellent protection against wear and corrosion in harsh conditions with the following features:

  • Powerful polar properties and excellent bonding to metal surfaces
  • Excellent protecting against water

Automatic lubricators
Suitable for use in automatic lubrication systems without any blocking or pumpability issues.

  • Good dosing, spraying and pumpable
  • No use of PFAS or microplastic additives in the formulation to avoid environmental issues and clogging of automatic lubricators
  • A low release delay and a low lagging time to minimize compressed air usage
  • Low back pressure, both static and dynamic

Temperature range
A wide operating temperature range within which the grease is extremely stable, thermally and oxidatively:

  • With an NLGI 0-1 consistency, making it pumpable in lubricators at temperatures between -20 and +50° Celsius

Other
Good delivery times and a reliable general availability

  • A clear and reliable insight into cost control

Interesting benefits and distinguishing lubricants

Developments mentioned above challenge the lubricant industry to innovate and offer solutions to their customers in this sector. As an independent family-owned company with almost 90 years of experience in the field of lubrication, we make sure you get the solution you need. Focussing on benefits like:

  • Extended service life of assets and lubricants themselves
  • More reliability & uptime
  • Less maintenance
  • Less spare parts
  • Less costs

Lubricating solutions for the marine & offshore sector

In addition to the benefits mentioned and our goal to minimize the number of types of lubricants and their volumes, here you will find some results that are typical for applications in the marine and offshore sector:

Wire ropes
Extending the service life of the wire ropes up to 500% and minimizing the lubrication frequency

Stern tubes and thrusters
Switching to biodegradable EAL lubricants while extending the service life of the equipment and improving reliability

Hydraulics
Switching to a biodegradable EAL oil without issues on seals and coatings
